Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology & Oral Microbiology
This department is known for many eminent personalities, Dr C.R. Ramachandran and Dr. T.R. Saraswati, the first woman oral pathologist in India who Contributed to the growth of the department. During his tenure as dean and head of the Department Dr.C.R Ramachandran was instrumental in uplifting the department and starting the post graduation program in 2006. This was followed by the start of Ph.D program. The Department plays a significant role in diagnosing the fatal oral cancer to produce accurate results. It is inbuilt with highly advanced instruments such as the 5 headed microscope, polarising microscope and photomicrography unit. Research is the major priority of the department and to cater to the needs of the researchers, many advanced techniques, including the immunoblotting methods and electrophoresis are performed. The department has a separate immunohistochemistry lab with 80 markers, which invite interdepartmental research activities. 11 doctoral degrees have been conferred and more than 4 scholars are pursuing PhD in the Department. More than 100 publications, both national and international indexed journals with a H index of 38 (till 2024) and 1524 (till 2024) citations are to the credit of the Department. The Department received the first grant in the history of RMDC&H worth 10 lakhs under the UGC major research project.
Many postgraduate students after passing out have been successfully got placed in Rajah Muthiah Dental college and Hospital and in many prestigious national and international dental institutions. Our postgraduates have become renowned speakers in International & National forums. The department is headed towards conducting various new researches in Oncopathology owing to the growing needs of the cancer research. Many undergraduate students guided by the department faculties received best paper and poster awards in various state and national level scientific events.
